A Little More Info About Bottled Water

Here’s a little bit more about the environmental cost of plastic bottles.

• 2 gallons of water are wasted in the purification of 1 gallon of water
• If you filled a water bottled ¼ full that’s about how much oil was used to make that bottle
• About 1.5 million barrels of oil are used to make plastic water bottles, that’s enough to run 100,000 cars for a whole year
• The bottles aren’t biodegradable, they just break down into smaller and smaller toxic pieces
• #1 & #7 plastic are the ones the leach BPA; #2, #4, & #5 don’t but they still require oil to be produced

For more information on tap water check out the EPA’s web site.

And once again, buy a filter and a stainless steel water bottle.

This is great info. And timely for me! I am still in the UK but flying over here- I bought 3 litres of water in the airport in Toronto for the plane. Not only did the plastic bottles make nuts- but that I spent nearly $10 on water! That in itself is crazy let alone all the wasted energy to bottle the water and all that. And that we can get free wine and coke on the plane but not water... That's a whole other issue.

You can't get free water on the plane, now that's crazy!

Thank you for your blog. If more of us become aware and take the time to become involved as you are, then we will make a difference. We too were concerned with plastic bottle pollution, as you mentioned, more than 150 billion are manufactured each year and only 20-30 percent is recycled. We knew something had to be done and quick so we started ENSO Bottles. We have developed the world's first truly biodegradable plastic bottle. We knew that bottles weren't going away so our approach is to make them more earth friendly. We know that ENSO Bottles aren't the final answer to our pollution problems but it is a step in the right direction.
