Second Hand, Second Chance

Today’s Easy Eco Idea is about shopping at thrift stores. There are probably very few ways to better lower your carbon footprint then by shopping at theses stores.

The things you find there are even better then made from recycled material or organic cotton, they’re clothes and bags and furniture that have already been made and can be given a second life. The items require no new production and usually are in very good condition.

Thrift stores and second hand stores can be real treasure troves. My will-be sister-in-law Melanie works at a Goodwill in a very well to do neighborhood near Boston and got a Louis Vuitton handbag for $5. Yes, 5 dollars!

So stop by your local store and give second hand a chance.

A local Church sometimes has a thrift store attached to it. The one near me will give you store credit for donating clothes, esp. baby clothes.

Some are better than others. I like the one near my mom's house, because they are large enough to sort their shirts by color and size.

The Salvation Arm was great in college. I found a ton of cheap and funky clothes there. I also found some fun pieces of luggage.
