Studio B And Me

As you know we recently moved to Placerville which is about 2 hours away from where we used to live. Because of this move I needed to find a new hair stylist.

I admit freely that I color my hair. As I’ve been on this green journey it has been one of the things that I have felt kind of guilty about, what with the crazy chemicals that are in hair dye, but did anyways.

That’s why I was so excited to find Studio B in downtown Placerville. It’s owned and operated by Brent Moody and he uses only organic hair care products and colors. Awesome!

The signs on the window advertising Dr. Hauschka and Organic Systems were actually what made me walk in the door. And you know what I noticed first; Brent’s tattoos.

No wait, I mean the smell or lack of. It’s a small space where everything is noticeable, but there wasn’t a hint of chemical smell.

Brent came over and introduced himself to me and I told him I had just moved to town and was looking for a new stylist. I asked him if he carried a particular brand of color and he said no, he only carried organic hair color. So I asked if he would be able to match my color with the product he had and he said absolutely. So I took the pamphlet that he handed me that talked a little about the salon and listed the products that he uses and left.

Now I am super picky about my hair color and red is really hard to do. It fades faster than any other so not all brands work as well. But I really liked the idea of getting away from chemical hair dye and I really liked the idea of going to Studio B, it just had such a warm friendly feel to it.

In the pamphlet it talks about how Brent wanted to “open a salon that reflected his vision of a place to have your hair styled in an environment free of the toxic chemicals that are common to the industry”.

So I went ahead and made an appointment and wondered if he did other things to green up his business.

Well, it turns out that yes he does. One of the things he does is he only mixes as much color as he thinks he really needs. Sometimes even underestimating because "it’s better to mix more than too much and just waste it".

Another thing I’ve never seen and makes me ridiculously happy is that he recycles right there in the shop. And not just soda bottles and paper but the foil he uses on hair. If you’ve ever been to a salon you know they use a lot of foil.

As he’s doing my hair we chat and he really seems genuinely interested. We talk about family, kids, (his are a bit older than mine so he could completely relate to me being super nervous about Dylan starting all day kindergarten) and Katie Holmes performance on So You Think You Can Dance. Oh it was a great time.

I loved that while I was waiting for the color to set he asked if he could get me a drink. Who does that anymore? It was my first time there and yet I felt like it was where I had always gone.

Now this whole time I was a little worried about if the color would match. He didn’t put it all over because I had gotten highlights the last time as well and he didn’t want to cover them up.

But oh, when it was dry it was amazing! It was so even and so shiny, it was just perfect! Now when you color your hair you’re supposed to wait a day to wash it to give the color some time to settle. Well I’ve never done that because I absolutely can’t stand the smell, I’m just glad I can make myself wait till the next day. But this time instead of my hair smelling all chemically it actually smelled kind of florally.

I loved that the salon was green but what I really loved was the real personal feel I got while I was there. I wasn’t just another hair color I was a person who would be coming back to gossip about So You Think You Can Dance.

So if you’re in the area I highly recommend you give Brent at Studio B a call, and be prepared for more than just a great style but a great stylist as well. 530-295-8108

Awesome! I always get headaches after going to salons, because of the chemical smell. What brand of hair colour did he use?

Me too! Now I either don't smell anything after or I'll get a hint of something sweet. Brent uses the organic colour and care system. If you click on "organic systems" above it will take you to their website.

Julia - this is great. Thanks for posting and sharing all the information. I am going to share it with my wonderful stylist who has her 'shop' behind her house in her lovely yard in Los Angeles!!
