Detox Delight
I went to see Dr. Heather (my chiropractor/health guru) on Monday for my monthly visit and told her how I had been sick for about a week and a half with some weird stomach virus.
She looked at me completely shocked and said “how long?!”
Me: “Um.. a week and a half.”
Her: “Were you taking probiotics?”
Me: “Uh..no.”
Her: “A week and a half is much too long to be sick. You really should have come in.”
Me: “…..” Yeah, I had nothing. I never call the doctor when I’m sick. They always say the same thing, “Drink water, get rest, and take these funky pills.” Pass.
However, Dr. Heather’s not a “regular” doctor and to be honest, I’ve never been sick like that before.
Now you may recall that I went to see her because my food and seasonal allergies had gotten so severe I basically couldn’t function any more. But after seeing her and changing my diet I was nearly 100%....until I got sick.
That virus totally blew out my gut and nearly undid all the progress I’d made. This especially bites because I’ve had to give up a lot of my favorite foods in order to get better since it turns out they were what was causing so much of my trouble. Yes, that’s me at the store looking for gluten, corn and soy-free but hopefully not taste free. And let me tell you, that's not easy to do!
What Dr. Heather (strongly) recommended I do is go on a detox to flush my system of all the bad bacteria and toxins left over from being sick. Woo-hoo!! (sarcasm)
The detox is 3 weeks and most of the foods you can’t have I can’t have anyways; soy, peanuts and corn, allergic; gluten containing grains, done; red meat, I eat but since I got sick I haven’t been able to because it was one of the first thing I got sick eating, bad association. Also, for 7 days I’ll be going completely vegan, as in no animal nothing. There are some that I do eat and will miss like dairy and eggs.
Why is it that foods I don't even eat are suddenly so appealing to me now that I can't eat them?
I’ll also be adding a supplemental drink mix 1-3 times a day depending on where I am in my detox and taking 6 probiotic pills for 5 days and then 3 for the rest of the detox.
So here I am on day 3 trying to make substitutes for dairy like coconut milk yogurt for regular, sherbet for ice cream and dark chocolate for milk chocolate.
Now the only thing in that list that may be better than the original is the coconut milk yogurt, that stuff is crazy good, it’s also crazy expensive so I probably won’t be having much of it. For me, sherbet will never be as good as ice cream and dark chocolate will definitely never be as good as milk chocolate. But all in all, the switches aren’t too bad.
And hey, this may just help me reduce my waste even further!

I've been going more vegan lately for personal reasons. I've been a vegetarian for 15 years. I've recently tries Purely Decadent, which is a dairy free ice cream. I did not like the one with "soy" in the name. However this one is good. I bought it at Whole Foods. I'm not sure if there is soy in it or not. I agree about the dark chocolate. I prefer the mint dark chocolate though. If you look up egg replacement on PETA, there is a product that you can buy. I have not seen it in a store yet, but I'm sure one carries it. I hope the detox works for you. If you are craving peanut butter, try sunbutter. Its made from sunflower seeds. I love it. My son has a peanut allergy, so I've tried different substitutes over time.
I just read your post on the Stuff ... and I just had to share it on twitter and facebook. Great information... things that you can see if you look hard enough, but not everyone wants to admit to happening. I like the simplicity... although admittedly the topic is overwhelmingly complex. The economic structure of the world is going to have to shatter to be replaced by something better-more sustainable-and those in power will probably never let it happen. But we can still try.
Hope you're feeling better soon.
Thanks for all the tips Kristy! I'll start looking for those things when I'm at the store.
I'm glad you liked my post enough to share it WackyMummy! Thanks tons!
Can you get B'nice rice icecream where you are? - it's vegan and soya free and makes me very happy :)

And these chocolate bars are pretty good too - no soya and vegan too http://www.veganstore.co.uk/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=1&Product_Code=003&Category_Code=510
Good luck with your detox - hope it makes you feel happier :)
