Green Food Gone Crazy

I’ve started reading this new blog called 365 Ways to Go Green about 365 easy green things you can do every day. It’s a year long journey where each day Mike tells you about the easy green thing he did that day.

Well yesterday’s post was “Dumpster Diving” Saving Wasted Food. When I saw the title the first thing I thought was “I’m all about reducing waste, but I don’t think I’ll ever be that green,” and was honestly a little worried about what I was about to read. I mean, dumpster diving means that you’re going through someone else’s trash to collect uneaten food. This does not sound appealing to me in the slightest.

But then I actually read the post. It was really odd, I mean, informative.

It was about how much usable food is thrown away every day. One of the facts that he gave was that 5% of American’s leftovers could feed 4 million people for 1 day. That is just pure and udder craziness!

I like that the post covers all aspects of how throwing out food is wasteful. It’s not just about the food that’s wasted but also about the transportation of the food to the landfill and all the space that the food takes up in the landfill because it’s not going to degrade.

Now, you don't need to go out and "dive" yourself, you just need to be more mindful of what you're throwing out and what your local store throws out as well.
