A Planting We Will Go

One of the things Dylan got for Christmas was an Indoor Gardening kit from Green Toys. There were 3 reasons that I was super excited about this toy; 1) it's a gardening kit which Dylan is really into right now because he has a garden at school 2) it's made from recycled milk jugs and 3) it's made right here in California.

Seeing as Dylan is only 5 he wasn't to worried about the how or where it was made, just that he got to garden since he's been asking if we could start a garden for months now.

So we got right to work on getting the plants planted. The kit came with 3 plants; teddy bear sunflowers, zinnia and basil.

First we put a soil pod in each planter.

Then we added 1 cup warm water.

After 20 minutes we broke up the soil to get it ready to plant.

Then we added the seeds.

And pushed them down.

And luckily I remembered to label them.

Now I didn't know ahead of time that the first 2 would have to be replanted outside. I thought that they where all going to be indoor plants. I'm hoping that they can stay as indoor plants because I have a slightly better track record of keeping indoor plants alive then I do with outdoor plants.

No matter where the plants end up, Dylan had a great time doing it and by having these I'm hoping it will help teach him a little extra responsibility since he's in charge of checking on them.

I'm totally digging (ha) this kit because it's a “toy” that he will definitely continue to play with, teaches him something along the way and we got to do together (by far the best part).

Awesome post! I tend to kill everything INSIDE. Seems when I leave it up to nature the little seeds fare better, lol.
