It's Been A Good Green Year
Ah, it's the first day of a new year and I'm feelin' pretty good.
I've been thinking about this last year a lot and all the changes that happened for my family. I decided to start this blog, which is now quite different then when I originally thought it up, we moved which meant a new job, new school for the boys and some new friends, Todd's gone back to school and I've gone gluten-free.
But mostly I've thought about it in how we've made little changes throughout the year to try and be a little greener. If you ask the boys they may tell you it's to help the planet and keep it looking nice, but most likely they will say “because mom said so”. Either way at least they're doing it.
I'm pretty proud of the changes we've made but I have noticed that with the move and especially the holidays some changes haven't quite stuck.
I've been buying more snacks the last 2 months which means more packaging and a fuller trash can. The kids have been home more and I'm much stricter when they're not around looking so cute and wanting chips.
I used to go to the farmers market every Saturday in Chico and other then the few times in the summer here in Placerville I haven't been to one. The closest year round one is in Sacramento which is probably 40 minutes away which isn't too far it just has seemed less convenient so I haven't done it. Plus it's all freeway which means a lot more in gas money.
So some things aren't exactly where I'd like them to be but others are still doing pretty well.
We're pretty good at saving water, the boys and I don't shower every day (haven't quite got Todd or my mom on that bandwagon yet), I only wash full loads of dishes or clothes and Dylan's excellent about letting it mellow when it's yellow.
I keep our thermostat set at 66* which is entirely too cold for me but means I'm using less electricity and gas.
So I'd like to do better on the things that have started to slide but remember to celebrate the things that we are doing.
So here's to a new year of living a little greener and remembering to most importantly have fun doing it.
Some of my fave green memories this year:

How could I possibly forget this one?

It looks like you have had a busy year making healthy changes, it sounds a lot like my home (Costa Mesa) miles away from your home (up North). But every little change is a good change, my kids too say it’s because Mommy and Daddy say so, but in the long run that’s all they know and that makes us and the the planet beautiful. We also call it Earth Bug Style in our home.
I’m glad to hear that you are all Earth Bugs, too.
Love and Peace and I look forward to all your new adventures.
Keep up the great work.
Thanks! Sometimes I wonder if I should try to make more of a big deal about why we do these things, but I think that they do know they maybe just don't know how important it is. But they will in time, I'm just glad that they're doing all these things.
Earth Bug Style, I like that!
Awesome post! Loved your green pics! We started our first garden this year too. It went so well that next year I'm gonna make it bigger. (I was mostly amazed that something IIIIII planted actually GREW anddddd was edible! lol
The outdoor garden was at our old house and didn't really do to well. That's why we're starting inside this time and hoping for a better outcome!
I nominated you for an award:
