No Compost = More Deer Food
It occurred to me during my last trash post or 2 that I had forgotten to mention that we aren't composting anymore.
Not because we don't want to but because our composter was having issues and we had to empty it out. By completely emptying it we were going to have to start all over with the dirt and saved food scraps and we just couldn't seem to make ourselves do it.
I think the composter went south because we weren't really putting a lot into it other then coffee grinds and the occasional scrap.
We have lots of deer and birds where we live and they all like our backyard which is only just shy of being a forest. So that means bread crusts, rice, fruit and veggie and such gets tossed out back to feed the animals. Is that weird?
Any meat leftovers like fat and skin is given to the dogs. If there's a lot it's saved for them for later.
Then we had things like banana peels and onion skins which couldn't go in our automatic composter anyways.
So the only food garbage is peels, veggie skins and coffee rinds. I'm not sure if they're is something better that I could do with them but because I need to throw them in the trash I still have to use plastic garbage bags which I had been hoping to give up.
I suppose it's not too bad since what I'm throwing away is stuff that wouldn't have gone into the composter anyways, well except the coffee grinds. If we try it again I think I will go with something that can take those things like a tumbler composter or maybe a worm bin. The boys would probably really like having a worm bin.
Now all I have to do is figure out what to do with my composter. Anyone interested?

I'm looking to invest in a new composter this year. Its just to hard to turn the stuff in it. There is one that you can roll around the yard, thus turning it. I think that my town might offer a deal on it this year. Its more expensive then my current one, but it will be eaiser for me I think.
Thanks Connie, glad to have you as a fan!
I hadn't thought about the tumbler being hard to turn Kristy, good to know. I think if we do it again I'm going to do the worm bin.
Oh yes, do a worm bin! you can learn soooo much about worms. there is a book "worms eat my garbage" with tons of info and a curriculum too. i did worm binning in my classroom and it was a big hit. i blogged about it in sept-oct of 2008 if you care to read up.
i am so grateful we have citywide composting in seattle. it takes everything! industrial compost is the way cities should go. it's a lot more efficient than individual bins.
You're so lucky Bitt! I wish they had a composting service here!
I'll definitely check out that post and book too.
Lucky for you,
Enjoy the Privilege!
Enjoy A Remarkable Day.
