Not Your Average Cup Of Joe

So remember how yesterday I was lamenting the tossing of our coffee grinds into the trash? Well last night I went over to My Zero Wastes' blog and there was a guest post by Whitney Kakos on, wait for it, 11 ways to reuse coffee grinds! Is that weird or what?

Some of the things listed are:

Eco exfoliant – rub coffee grinds on skin (face, elbows, body) then rinse, or add to face wash
Hair rinse – use as last step for shiny hair (probably shouldn't be done on light hair)
Pest control – apparently ants won't cross coffee
Hand deodorizer – after chopping onions, garlic or anything else smelly, rub coffee grinds on them to neutralize the smell

I decided to look around to see if there were other uses as well and came across Green Daily. They had an article with 20 uses (some that were the same) and a DIY cellulite mix with coffee grinds and olive oil. Awesome!

Now I don't know how long the coffee grinds will last, they are wet so I think they have the possibility of molding. So what I'm going to do is save them in a sealed container and whatever isn't used by the end of the week will be spread along the house or put around the blackberry bushes (coffee grinds are also great for soil according to the 2 above).

I'm just super happy they won't be going to waste in the garbage anymore!

Wow lots of neat ideas for coffee grind reuse. I've never even thought about it, as mine go straight into my compost where they become fertilizer for next years veggies :0)

Oh, By the way, you can also compost your paper filter too ( I recently changed to one of those "forever" filters that come with my new coffee post)

I have a forever filter also but that's good to know that the other kind can be composted!

Interesting. I wonder if you could make and sell hazelnut scrub from used coffee grinds? LOL.

Actually, I've heard that you can get used grounds from Starbucks as a lot of people use it for compost.

I gotta research this more, it's one of my "to do" things in the New Year.

That would be really cool if Starbucks did that!

I like a coffee ground scrub. The smell of coffee it nice, but not the internal effects I get.

Search feature added to my blog! Thank you for requesting it!

Yeah, I don't actually drink coffee but my husband and mom do so I'm glad we can do something else with it now.

Yay, I'm going to go test drive it now!

As the owner of a small bath and beauty company (natural)...yes, I can tell you coffee is GREAT for exfoliation! And the other stuff too! AND for the garden! Sprinkle around the base of plants!

DId you ever see my other blog? I'll put it in my name link for this comment.

Coffee grounds can be used as a soil amendment without any composting, but it is also a good addition to compost. When I worked at a large fair trade coffee company, we saved grounds from the two local retail outlets in big used cooking oil buckets and a local farmer picked them up every month or so to toss into his manure pit. If you are a gardener and you live near a coffee roastery you should see if they give away the chaff that comes off the beans during roasting. It is a pretty good mulch with lots of nitrogen.

That's great that the coffee company did that!

I did recently use some of hubby's coffee as a body scrub, and loved it:)

Some people just toss them in the kitchen sink to keep the drain clean.

All these ideas for the coffee are wonderful, but what about us tea drinkers...lol!
