One Ecotastic Adventure! {Giveaway}

Holy rusted metal Batman, it's been 1 year today since I started this blog!!

Photobucket

Now I'm going to be honest with you. I've never stuck with anything for a year (husband & children excluded).

When I started this crazy green writing adventure I really didn't know what to expect. I didn't know anyone who blogged and I had actually never even read a blog.

There were 2 things I wanted to have happen:

    1) I wanted to do something that I enjoyed that was outside of being a mom & wife. Well, I'd say that I got that one half right. I absolutely love writing this blog, but considering all the things I make my family try (hankies & zero waste week anyone?) I don't think I can say that it's completely outside of my family. ;)

    2) I wanted at least one other person (who wasn't related to me) to enjoy reading my blog. I know, I shouldn't care what other people think but I do and I wanted one of them to like me. Well all I can say is “You like me, you really like me!” Sorry, couldn't help myself.

This has been an incredible ride and I have met some truly amazing people on my ever continuing green journey.

One of those people is Alex from Stay Vocal. He owns a great reuse apparel company that keeps unwanted tees out of landfills.

Back in December he did cereal t-shirts that were sent in cereal boxes and contained prizes just like cereal used to back in the day. Well, he asked me to contribute a prize and I made hankies out of an old shirt that I put my logo onto. It turns out Alex really liked those hankies so....he wants to help make a line of Stay Vocal/Easy Eco To Go hankies!

There will be two different styles of hankies with both of our logos on them and they are going to be sweet! There is way too much to say about this awesome project so I'm saving the rest of it for tomorrow! hehe

Another great company that I have met and gotten the opportunity to work with is TerraCycle. They were the first company to send me products to review (I still get compliments on Dylan's CapriSun lunch bag) and I just truly love what they are doing.

One of the first things I thought of doing when I realized my blogiversary was coming up was to do a giveaway. But since I had suddenly started doing lots of giveaways I wanted to do something extra special. I immediately thought of TerraCycle and how they've supported Easy Eco To Go in the past.

And let me tell you, they did not disappoint. So for my big 'ol 1 year blogiversary, TerraCycle is giving one lucky reader a billboard tote bag stuffed with cool circuit board goodies like, a picture frame, coasters and a clock. SWEET! Now that's a giveaway!

So how do you enter this fabulous giveaway you ask? Well let me tell you. This one's a little different then the previous ones. For the main entry for this giveaway leave a comment telling me one green change you've made in your life since March '09. It certainly doesn't have to be big, anything counts.

TerraCycle is also hosting a giveaway on their Facebook fan page. All you need to do is leave a comment saying what new green change you'd like to make by March '11. So be sure to stop by and enter that one as well!

As always there are additional ways you can enter:

  • Follow @easyecotogo on Twitter and leave your @name (1 entry)
  • Follow TerraCycle on Twitter and leave your @name (1 entry)
  • Follow Stay Vocal on Twitter and leave your @name (1 entry)
  • Write a blog about the contest/blogiversary or email 3 friends & cc me on the email easyecotogo at gmail.com (3 entries, please leave 3 comments)
  • Tweet about the contest (Celebrate @easyecotogo's 1 yr blogiversary w/a great #giveaway from @TerraCycle! http://bit.ly/aRpayF ) (1 entry, can be done once a day. Please leave a comment for each tweet)
  • Follow my blog in Google Friend (1 entry)
  • Subscribe to Easy Eco To Go (2 entries, leave 2 comments)
Add my button to your blog (leave your site with your comment so I can stop by and say hi!) (3 entries, please leave 3 comments)

Separate comments must be left here for each additional entry!

Also, please include your email with comments or if you’d rather, after you leave your main entry comment, email me at easyecotogo(at)gmail(dot)com so I will have a way of contacting you if you win. You will have 48 hours after I contact you to send me your info or else I will choose another winner.

The contest will run from Monday March 1, 2010 thru Monday March 8, 2010 at 11:59 pm PST. Sorry, but the contest is only open to US residents.

And as always the boys will help me pick a winner which will be announced Tuesday the 9th.

one green change I've made since March '09 - I stopped buying chocolate milk boxes for my older son's lunches. I already made him waste-free bento-style lunches, but I had continued to buy him those darn milk boxes. I ended that nonsense by purchasing a reusable insulated cup (Thermos Fundainer) and just fill it with homemade chocolate milk. Now his lunches are 100% waste-free. :)

Over the past year I have stopped using paper towels to clean messy hands and faces and instead use washcloths. I couldn't believe how many paper towels we were going through and the washcloths work much much better at cleaning sticky hands and faces.

Hi!
A change I made over the past year is more re-purposing of items I used to re-cycle or throw away.
I have used cereal boxes and milk cartons as gift wrap thanks to Maya at Maya*Made.

What a fun giveaway! Happy Bloggiversary!!

My biggest green change was taking the whole fam down the vegan road. While they aren't all 100% vegan (yet) they are SO much closer than they were one year ago. =)

How fabulous!

We've made a huge number of changes within the last year. Our biggest one is that we replaced our 1960s refrigerator with a small Sun Frost refrigerator-only model which literally uses 5% of the energy of our old one. We have a small upright freezer in the basement, and that is where we now make ice and keep leftovers. It is a slight inconvenience but not as much as we thought it might be.

Hi!

I've made lots of changes in the past year with regard to going greener (we've always done a lot of green things...recycling, using cloth napkins, conserving water etc). We've had a vegetable garden for the past couple of years, but last year I started composting in earnest. I bought a countertop composter and we keep a bucket outside the back door to collect the biodegradable bags when they're full, before they go to the actual compost "heap". Also, I've become more aware about household appliances and how much of them arerecyclable...recently, I completely disassembled a broken-down coffee maker - right down to the chipboard circuitry and was able to recycle almost the entire thing! Ask Terracycle about it, I posted the story and pictures to their Facebook page!

Speaking of Terracycle, that's probably the biggest thing I did in the past year...getting involved with them. To make a long story short, I started a juice pouch collection program at my daughter's school and I now run a total of three brigades. I have collected thousands of pouches from the school (which benefits the school on many levels) and helped improve awareness of recycling for the students. Over the summer, I sponsored a juice pouch collection contest and awarded (what else?) Terracycle items as prizes! I collected over 3,700 pouches from the contest alone, which otherwise would have ended up in landfills...

All in all, it's been a good, green year for me and my family. I know we have a way to go, but we're working on it.

Thanks to YOU for this terrific blog (of which I JUST became aware today) and win or lose, I hope I inspired someone to recycle something they otherwise would not have thought to recycle.

Cheers!

Janet

Last April, I took my passion for recycling to my daughter's school. We joined the Terracycle Drink Pouch Brigade. I manage the program for the school. We've collect just over 2,000 drink pouches. I just ordered some pencil cases made from the drink pouches to sell at our Box Tops store and to give away at our Family Fun Nights.

I forgot to mention that I will be teaching a crafts class how to make pop tab bracelets. I made up some kits with a photo tutorial and enough elastic & pop tabs to make one bracelet. I hope they go out and teach others how to make them too!

One big green thing we've done is start a green blog of our own: Green Lifestyle Consulting to share ideas and information about how to live greener, especially with a family.

On another note, we also had our home air sealed and insulated this fall.

One change I've made since March 09 is that I traded in my second hand nonstick griddle for a cast iron griddle. One change I'd like to make by March '11 is to find a panini/indoor grill that doesn't have a toxic nonstick coating. That's the last nonstick coated thing I have in the house.

Since March '09 my husband & I have made 3 big green changes. We both went Vegan, probably one of the biggest green changes possible, and we're loving every bit of it! We also signed up for a brigade with TerraCycle to support a local no-kill animal shelter that is desperately in need of funding. So far we collect chip bags, cookie, candy & chocolate wrappers, energy bar & granola bar wrappers, yogurt cups, drink pouches, and anything Kashi brand. And 3rd, since we had already been using only reusable bags, we bought chico bags for gifts for everyone we know. Even our X-mas presents were wrapped in chico bags! Can't wait to see what the next year brings!

Just yesterday we installed a dual flush toilet.
We use no paper towels, paper plates or paper napkins. We no longer buy any bottled water.
We eat 2 meatless meals per week.
Bought bicycles to use for short trips around town.

Over the last 3 years we have stopped using our household dryer to dry clothes, they now go out on the line. We recycle all paper, plastic, glass and aluminum. We grow our own veggies and have free range chickens and eggs. We donate or freecycle anything we don't need or use.

Laura said...

We've made tons of changes in the past several years, but the most recent one has been starting and maintaining Terracycle brigades in two schools. We're collecting juice pouches, chip bags and yogurt containers, so there are several hundred families that are now diverting their waste to Terracycle so it's not ending up in the landfill. One other change is that we have been taking as much of our waste that isn't recyclable or reusable (to us) to a center that collects and redistributes materials for teachers to use in the classroom, so it is getting reused, and the schools are saving money on supplies. Win/win! :)

Whew what have I done since March 2009. I have put a huge recycle bin in the kitchen for ALL plastic and recruited my six year old son to be the plastic police. That is working out just fine. My 13 yr old son and I have decided roadside litter will be our monster to tame this year. We pick up every Sunday afternoon for an hour or more, then recycle everything we can. Started a Terracycle program at the boys school and I stand outside every Friday morning during am carpool to colelct. We also collect Elmer's glue sticks inside the school. Lauched a reuseable shopping bag fundraiser to gather funds for a salt water touch tank for the school, double plus ocean pollution education and the kids get to see what they are saving everyday. That's about all I can think of for right now. Our family is pushing forward this year to eliminate our plastic consumption.

Since this time last year our family has changed to an all organic natural lawn service. With a small child and dog we started becoming concerned over the pesticides and chemicals that were being used on our lawn. With our soil much of this was being washed off into the streets and water runoffs. We switched to an all liquid compost, microorganism, and fish emulsion fertilizer company called Soils Alive. Our plants and bushes are amazing and we are not worried about rolling around in the grass anymore. Instead of treating the symptoms of weeds and unwanted pests, the soil is healthy, nutritious, causing the grass to be thick and choke out the weeds naturally. Additionally beneficial insects have come to combat mites, aphids, and scale. I recommend this change to anyone for a healthy home!

I keep this simple questio in mind as I shop :
WHAT CAN I DO WITH THE PACKAGING IN THE WAY OF REUSE OR CRAFTABILITY WHEN IT IS EMPTY ?

This question has swayed me from buying things.I spend less asking myself this question !

Ask yourself the same question each & every time you are at the store.

you will see !
