Adventures In Natural Egg Dyeing
Today we got our natural egg dye on. Being that this was our first time trying it didn't go to bad. Tyler and Dylan liked making the dye themselves, it wasn't nearly as messy as I thought it would be and I learned that white eggs dye better then brown eggs, at least with the colors we used.
So here's what we used and how it went.
Tyler and I went to the store yesterday and picked out the fruits and spice that we were going to use. We chose canned blueberries, raspberries, plums, cranberries and turmeric.
I added one can to 2 cups of water for the fruit and 1 1/2 tbsp to 2 cups for the turmeric in sauce pans. Then we mixed and squished the ingredients.
I brought the mixtures to a boil and then simmered for 20 minutes.
While we waited for the dyes we got the eggs ready with rubber bands and a white crayon.
Once the dye was done and had cooled off I added 1 tbsp vinegar and then we plopped our eggs in.
After letting them soak an hour we took them out,
Took the rubber bands off,
And voila, naturally dyed eggs!
We did 12 eggs, 2 were whiteish and 10 were brown. I ended up not using the cranberries and just used the blueberries, raspberries, plums and turmeric.
I found the blueberries and turmeric worked best on the brown eggs, where as the raspberries and plums did very little to change their color.
Other then that this took a while to do, it was really very easy. Todd's happy with this method because it means he can eat the eggs without worrying about the dye getting on the eggs.
The boys' actually enjoyed it more then I thought they would since there was so much waiting involved, so that made me happy. And you know I loved that there were no funky ingredients involved!
This is definitely going to be a new tradition around here.
Oh, and the left over fruit was tossed out for the deers, squirrels and birds to eat.
Hope you have a great Easter (or lovely Sunday!), I know we will!
