I Heart TerraCycle {Giveaway}

Ok, so last week I mentioned that for this month only TerraCycle is going to be in every single Wal-Mart. There will be 60 different TerraCycle products on the shelves all made from items collect in their Brigades, but they'll only be there during April.

Photobucket

TerraCycle has tons of different brigades for all types of “garbage”. They collect juice pouches, candy wrappers, chips bags, yogurt cups and wine corks just to name a very few. All you have to do is go to their web site and sign-up for one of the brigades and you’re on your way.

But what’s great is that it doesn’t just benefit TerraCycle (lots of free materials) it also benefits you, or more specifically, your organization. TerraCycle donates 2 cents per item back to the non-profit or school of your choice.

Photobucket

I run a Capri Sun Brigade at my boys’ school. There are just under 400 kids at their school and when we sent our first batch in December we had collected over 1800 pouches and made $37. We just sent another batch in I’m betting it was at least that many, if not a little bit more. It cost us nothing to collect or ship these and we made money on something that otherwise would have just gone into the recycle can.

Photobucket

So what’s the big deal about TerraCycle being in every Wal-Mart? Well, TerraCycle is still a pretty small company and previously you could only find a couple items in some stores. If you wanted to see everything they have you had to go online to shop. Being in a major chain store means a lot more exposure for their products but also for what they’re trying to do.

Photobucket

Now, I’m not going to get into a big debate on the greenness on shopping at Wal-Mart. I know people have very strong feelings about the store. What I am going to do is tell you what I think, ‘cause I know you want to know. ;)

I don’t shop at Wal-Mart, but this whole TerraCycle in Wal-Mart has got me thinking. I’m always hearing from green people that we need to “vote with our dollars”. Well, for me, TerraCycle is super green and I want to support them. The only way to get them into more stores is for them to be a success at Wal-Mart. So to support TerraCycle I have to shop at Wal-Mart. So that’s what I’m going to do. I don’t think boycotting a store at the expense of a good green company is really helpful. Maybe it’s the optimist in me but I’d like to believe that if we show big box stores that we want truly green choices they’ll provide, even if for no other reason than so that they can make money. Isn’t that what voting with our dollars is all about anyways, demanding change?

Alrighty then…. How about we move onto something a little lighter, shall we?

One of Teracycles new product lines is tote bags, wristlets and clutches made out of chips bags. What makes this one so different is that they aren’t using the branded side; they’re using the plain side and printing on it. I’m a big fan of the stars one. Ok I’m a big fan of stars period so I may be biased, but whatever. And guess what, they want to give one of their new star totes to one of you!

My favorite green company is TerraCycle because as a student it is the most tangible green company that I know of. I especially love the recycled pencils!

What's not to love about Terracycle? Super cute products made out of my kids's and their classmates' empty juicepouches!!! We make a little $$$money$$$ for their school and upcycle stuff that would end up in the landfill. Terracycle is my fave green company, but Wal-mart is in there, too. They listen to their customers and are adding recycled/upcycled products everyday.

Of course I do love TerraCycle. I am starting several Brigades at my children's school. Besides TerraCycle, my favorite is Stonyfield Yogurt. I love that they care how much of an impact their product has on the environment. With them reducing waste on their own, EVERTONE who chooses to buy a Stonyfield products, for whatever the reason, is doing their part for the environment - whether they realize it or not!

My son's school has sent in 7300 pouches this year. I think that will be enough to make plenty of the back packs I love so much. I am already a terracycle follower. I will add you to the blogs I follow.

Hmmm. I honestly don't know a lot of other green companies besides Terracycle. I saw their stuff at Target back when the school year began and have been hooked ever since. I'm the librarian at our school and run the brigades. I guess I did see some things at Barnes and Noble this weekend. Still. Like the Terracycle stuff best. Something about the CapriSun and FritoLay upcycled products that makes me smile. Good use made of trash!

yeah i am not a big fan of walmart. mostly because of how they treat their employees. but i think it's awesome that terracycle is going to be there!

my favorite green company? can i say a local one? cedar grove compost! they take all our yard and food waste and make it into compost. can't get much greener than that.

Terracycle is my favorite green company. I love what they do! I am able to help the environment and my favorite charity at the same time. Plus, their products are awesome!

It is hard to choose one Terracycle product that I like best, but I would have to say the messenger bags, particularly the cookie wrapper style. I am hoping to find one at my local Walmart, and maybe a juice pouch laptop case because I think that is very cool too! I already have several of their other products and I have been very pleased with the quality and durability of them.

The urban art trash cans look awesome. Never thought I would get excited about a trash can..
There are other items at WalMart you might want to support. I do shop there by the way. You can by some organic salad greens and a few organic fruits and vegetables. The one I go to also has organic tofu. They also carry organic cotton Danskin yoga clothes. Additionally, the store I go to has installed enormous solar panels on the front of the store to catch the afternoon sun. They put in many skylights to reduce the amount of electric light they need to use. It feels good to be able to get some natural light in the middle of a store like that. WalMart is actually undertaking quite a few green initiatives. Oh, and I also buy White Cloud toilet paper made from 100% recycled paper at WalMart. Just a few suggestions of other items you can get while in for your Terra Products.
