Maybe It Is Easy Being Green

Tomorrow’s the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the biggest big holiday for greenies of all shades. So I’ve been trying to think of something special to do.
I’ve talked about how we’re going to start a garden at my grandparents but that’s not going to be until the beginning of next month. I do also really want to grow some things here as well like lettuce, tomatoes and maybe some herbs, ok, definitely some herbs. So that might be something I could get started tomorrow. That would however require me to go get the pots from my grandparents, up the hill, and also go to a nursery and pick those things up. That would mean lots of driving around which some how doesn't feel quite right since in a couple of weeks I'll be able to do both of those for the garden at the grandparents.
I even have some cute little tomato seed cups from TerraCycle that we can get started on. You can find these growing kits, as well as other brand new products, at Wal-Mart through the end of the month as TerraCycle’s little extra special way of celebrating Earth Day’s 40th anniversary. I wonder if I’ll finally be able to get the boys to try tomatoes since they’ll be the ones growing them? I guess we’ll find out soon enough.
The other thing that I had thought about that would be a little extra special for us would be to walk the boys to and from school tomorrow. Their school is about a mile and a half from here but because we live in the foothills, none of that walk is flat. That means it takes a little longer and is a little more difficult on short legs, Dylan’s and mine, which would be why we’ve never done it before. However, there’s a good chance it will still be raining tomorrow so that may not work out.
So after trying to think of something extra special and maybe a little bit big it hit, big is so not the point! I guess I was just feeling like since we already do lots of little things then I really had to do something out of the ordinary for it to count.
But I guess I forgot that every time I park my car down the hill and walk up it to pick the boys up instead of idling in that long a$$ line, it counts. When I wash out a plastic container to use it again instead of tossing it in the recycle box, it counts. When I shop at the farmers’ market and get food grown locally instead of food shipped in, it counts.
And all those little things we don’t really think about add up too. Things like picking up a piece of trash, turning the lights off, using non-toxic cleaning products or deciding what you want out of the fridge before you open the door (no staring and wasting cold air).
So while the fam and I try to live like every day is Earth Day it’s nice to stop and take a day to not only think about what more we can do, but to celebrate all that we are currently doing.

So are you going big or keeping it simple this Earth Day?

Great post! Being green doesn't need to be big and extravagant in order to be effective! That is something I tend to forget myself. I always try to remind myself that lots of little steps still get you somewhere.
keeping it simple! although i will try to get to the farmer's market again. that's a grand gesture for me it seems.
thanks for caring about the earth and all you do.
Love this post - thanks! And your kids are so stinkin cute! Love that last one. Aw.
Love Mama Earth! Being more conscious of each thing I do makes a difference.
simple. yrs past we went to a giant huge ridic big earth fair, you saw that post and told me you went to a fest too...but anyway, i wish i was doing somethng more "big" and grande but it will be low key by default this yr. hey, maybe the earth will thank me for keeping it simple.
Great post! The little things really do add up. Sometimes all those small things are greater than one big gesture anyway. =)
Love your attitude!
