Anyone For Frozen Strawberries?

I just want to check, it’s May right? It’s well into spring and summer break is just around the corner (the 27th here), right? Ok, just checking.

I’ve wanted a garden for a few years now but living where we did before with it being so crazy hot (average of 100) and my innate inability to keep things alive, that just wasn’t much of a reality.

So when we moved up to the foothills I thought that maybe between having the plants on the patio where I will definitely see them, planting at my grandparents where my grandpa can help keep an eye on everything and milder spring and summer weather, I may just do ok.

You know how excited I was to get these gardens started. I mentioned or wrote about gardening in at least half a dozen posts. Then finally the reports said that the last frost days had come and it was safe to plant, so we did some containers here and 2 gardens (plus a little extra) at my grandparents.

The week after we planted here we had a nasty frost. But with a little trimming, everything bounced back just fine. I admit to a mild freak out, but I calmed down.

Now, a week after we get the garden going at my grandparents, it snows! We had a little snow done here but my grandparents are higher up then me so they actually got inches! It’s nearly the middle of May; it’s not supposed to snow in May! Seriously, what’s up with that?!

It turns out everyone knows it can snow in May expect me, fine. Naturally I went online to see if me veggies and strawberries are all going to die and make me have to start all over because they got snowed on. It turns out a little snow isn’t really all that bad and can actually provide insulation and then a nice slow drink of water as the snow melts. Most of the problems occur when people start messing with the snow on their plants and inadvertently end up hurting the plants.

Fine, I’m calming down once again, but must admit I’m still not entirely convinced. I just so badly want these little gardens to do well and I’m a worrier by nature so every little thing sends me into a panic.

My patio garden looks ok and my grandma said that the bed gardens look ok from the house (hehe). So this weekend I’ll probably head up there to check them out and hopefully, at worst, I’ll just need to do a little trimming.

Next year however, I may wait a little longer before starting the gardens, just in case. Hopefully this will save me at least a few panic attacks. ;)

Ah, the ever exciting world of trial and error along the green journey path. And I’ll bet ya dollars to donuts this is more trial than it is error. So my advice, if you’ve never tried gardening before double check the weather for your area.

some of my herbs survive all winter long, so you never know! you can always call a garden hotline or a garden shop for advice. Or make a mini hoop house for them. the most sensitive are little plants and yours look pretty well grown. but i am not an expert.

Oh sweetie! I totally understand. It is snowing here today too. 2 things; I start my gardens indoors until June and then plant things outside. Secondly, always check the weather report and cover planters when it's going to be cold.

Never give up, never surrender!! ;-)

I always wait til mid May. Of course, we still had one hard frost last year 2 days after we planted...and it was NOT forecasted. lol. Hope for the best. It looks pretty...lol...

Wow! Sorry about the frosty weather! What a drag! Our tomato plants are outside but not yet planted. We're wondering if that was a good idea. They're protected but looking a little "under the weather." Hope things turn out alright for both of us and this weather warms up!
