Journey In Gardening

I’m finding that the weather here in the foothills is just nutty. It’s been in the high 70’s, it’s snowed and it’s been in the mid 50’s, that’s just crazy to me. And I’m not sure it’s been the best for my gardens either.

Some of the veggies are doing just great while others, well, not so much. I’m going to give the ones that aren’t doing so well a little more time, maybe another couple of weeks, but if they don’t bounce back I may just replace them.

So what’s doing well? For one, my lettuce, it’s huge! The green onions in with the lettuce are looking pretty good too.

My herbs are also looking great. I’ve got chives, cilantro and pineapple mint together.

Up at my grandparents the long leaf kale is looking quite tasty. The broccoli (at the bottom) is also looking good.

And the carrots at my grandparents and the ones here are all doing really well. I’m super excited about these because they’re the only ones we planted as seeds so I was a little more worried about if I did it right. Looks like I didn’t have anything to worry about.

The curly kale, over with the peas, however do not look like they’re doing too well. They look exactly the same as they did when I first planted them and I’m pretty sure they should be bigger.

The watermelon plants also look the same as when they were planted. Actually, they look worse then they did when they were planted. The boys were super excited about growing watermelon so I’ll definitely be replacing these.

So while some things are doing better than others I’m still pretty darn happy overall. I’m learning that gardening isn’t as scary as I thought it would be and that even when things don’t go as planned (snow in May) it doesn’t necessarily mean disaster. That and that next year I will definitely wait until June to plant.

Fantastic!

When you replant your watermelon, maybe try planting seeds instead of plants. They should have enough time yet to grow from seed. (they come up with in a few days) Plus then you'll have some seeds leftover for next year. I think some of those types of plants have a hard time transplanting. I have had some bad luck transplanting cukes and melons before. This year I planted from plant but put some extra seeds nearby just in case.

You're linked up!

Well that's IT! I'm gonna buy some plants this weekend. My onions? Dead. Unbelievable! Your stuff looks wonderful compared to my pitiful withered mess. Great post.

Yay! It ALL looks great,Julia! Isn't gardening fun! Pineapple mint does sound fab... I'm trying to get some roots off a cutting. Hope it happens. Your kale looks divine... is that from seed?

I agree with ali! I planted some plants (squash actually) along with some seeds nearby just in case the plants didn't take off. For two or three weeks the plants just sat there... finally they are taking off! The plants I planted by seed alongside look just as big too! Go figure!

Aliceson & Sticks - Thanks for the tip, if it ever warms up here I'll go get some seeds!

Bitt & Sheila - glad I could inspire you two! I would recommend lettuce to anyone just starting, it definitely seems to be the easiest to grow! Not that either of you are beginners, but whatever. ;)

Mama - no the kale was a starter that I bought at the nursery.

Kelli - I was actually hoping to find chocolate mint, but settled for pineapple! ;)

Evergreen - They taste just as good as they look! I made a big salad with the lettuce last night.

Holly - Thanks! hehe
