Planting And Re-Planting, Life With A Garden
The nutty weather that we’ve had this month is apparently not the norm around here according to my grandpa. That pretty much seems to be par for the course for weather not being the way it’s supposed to up here, like the fact that it rarely ever snows in Placerville and even when it does it’s just a dusting. Um yeah, and then this winter we had 15 inches, yay.
So anyways, after the ridiculous cold, lots of rain and even a little snow the gardens are still going, well mostly anyways.
Our patio garden is actually doing quite well. Even when it did snow, we did in fact only get a dusting here, which didn’t seem to hurt anything. Heck, I think that the herbs and lettuce actually loved it.

Now the gardens up at my grandparents, well, not everything fared quite as well. We live in the foothills where as my grandparents live about 1,000 ft higher up then us. So any bad weather we were having was even worse for them, like the dusting of snow we had was 3 inches for them. Some of the veggies have made it through just fine while others are definitely not going to be bouncing back like I had hoped.
Of everything up there, the kale and the broccoli are definitely doing the best.
The tomatoes, peppers and watermelon all have to come out and get replanted.

I went ahead and pulled all the dead plants out. My grandparents went ahead and bought 2 tomatoes to re-plant, which grandpa and I planted. My grandma was really bummed about all the tomatoes dying so I'm hoping that these 2 take off and bloom quickly.

I really liked the containers that the tomatoes came in. The containers are made from peat moss so all you have to do is pull off the bottom and then just plant the whole thing.

I loved this because I really hated all those plastic containers that the plants came. You can take the containers back, but only if you don’t destroy them while trying to get the plants out. Anyone want to guess if I had any containers to take back?
Ok, so I got those 2 tomato plants done and I plan on going and getting a grape tomato, green bell peppers, banana peppers and watermelon seeds. Aliceson from Feet Off the Table suggested growing the watermelon from seed instead of starters so I figured I would give it a try. They certainly couldn’t turn out any worse then the last ones.
Even though this weather isn’t typical, I think that next year I’m going to wait until mid-May or later to start at least the garden at my grandparents house. Of course I say that now, but patience has never been my strong suit. ;)

Nor my strong suit. lol. Your soil looks awesome!!!!! As do your plants! I can't wait to hear how your watermelon take off...and I just added cantelope seeds and they are starting to bloom as of this morning! So I'll let you know. lol. Although I'm not a big cantelope eater...but they looked so cute on the package. *blink*
I hate the plastic containers too. I try to reuse them for my own planting of wheatgrass and microgreens.
Sorry the veggie-Q got interrupted by meat. Its one of those things a lot of meat eaters have a hang-up on. It can bring out the caveman and woman in people.
It's so hard to wait to plant when Ma nature gives us a few teaser warm days early on in spring. Trust me, the watermelon should come up within a few days and mature before the end of summer. You'll be eating watermelon and wiping the juice off your elbows in no time!
I save the plastic pots for starting my own seeds (at least the ones that didn't tear when I pulled the plants out) for next year. I'm starting to get quite a collection!
Your herbs and lettuce look great!
Your garden pictures are so inspiring, it is fun to watch things grow:)
I keep threatening to plant a garden, but the season where I am is so short, my house looked like your snowman picture last week...JK!
