Attack Of The Birds
So it turns out that we’re not the only ones excited about our little patio garden. Who else could be as excited as us you ask? Well I’ll tell you who, the birds.
They’ve been enjoying the strawberries, which would explain why I haven’t had any to pick in awhile.
And they really love the carrot tops, there used to be about a dozen carrots in there. I’m curious if the carrots are still ok and if I could still harvest them.
Awesome. So yesterday Todd found some old cds, cut them in half, punched a hole in them and tied them to a string. The shininess is supposed to keep the birds away and I sure hope it works.
There are tons of flower buds on the strawberries so I’m really hoping the birds stay away so we can finally have some!
The other container of carrots is doing great and I think that I could probably pick some of them. That’s the hardest part for me, knowing when things are ready to be picked. I'm thinking that these ones didn't get eaten because they were planted with chives. Definitely something to keep in mind for next time.
Both the pole beans and the peppers have buds on them, which is exciting.

And the tomato plant is getting pretty huge. I think I should probably do something to help it grow more upright though, it’s looking a bit like the leaning tower of Pisa.
So the adventure, and the learning, continues. But all in all I still think things are going pretty well.
We haven't been up to my grandparents' house in a little while but my grandpa told me that the broccoli are getting heads on them and the watermelon's are starting to come up. We're planning on going up today so there may be more gardening updates later on.

Darn birds! Seems as though everyone is having bird issues this week.
Everything else looks great and YES I think a little pruning and maybe a stake or two would benefit your tomato plant. They get out of control rather quickly esp. if it gets enough water and sunshine!
You're linked up!
I hope the shiney things work. I have had some bird and squirrel issues with my sunflower and wheatgrass sprouting. They love to take nibbles.
I would get a tomato cage for the tomatoes. They are gonna get big.
How funny that all garden posts I've read this week have issues with birds! lol.
I left shelia a link on some balloons that help with birds. I saw them at a local berry patch.

As far as the tomatoes we had ours staked and caged but we still had to go back and stake them all again! :)
Love your blog!

Hey Julia! Your garden is lookin' great! We have to worry about both birds and our chicks... if they get loose they'll have a field day. ;) Anyway, hope the CD's help and yeah, a tomato cage would prolly help.
The critters are part of the reason I haven't attempted a garden yet! I sure hope you can enjoy some lovely strawberries soon:)
Birds...so sorry they like your garden!
Ok the Taekwondo pics and story is awesome! And NEVER shy away from topics b/c you think they dont "fit" the blog. Have you seen my blog lately from raw crackers to hemp dip to tatts to homeschooling to gay rights to broccoli?! Mishmash! But that's life! And that's what people like to read about anyway...i love our Taek story more than any food stories :)
But those choc cookies...i have seen those and b/c of the egg i have never made them but wish i could. The egg is the only glue and flax egg just woulndt work i dont think.
Thx for all the awesome comments today you've left for me :)
We made a scarecrow ... and haven't seen a bird in that part of the garden since. It must be pretty scary, even the dogs and grandkids are wary of it ...
I thought the CDs is a brilliant idea! I certainly hope it'll work. :)
