Sometimes Bulking Up Is A Good Thing
Once a month or so I make a trip to Costco to stock up on certain things. There are just certain things that we use a lot of and are definitely worth the drive because the cost savings is so great.
This trip I got pretzels, tortilla chips and fruit. I was going to get coffee also but I had just gone crazy at Trader Joe’s so my mom’s going to pick that up later.
Pretzels are one of the few non-fruit snacks that I buy for the boys and at the grocery store a 1-pound bag for about $2. Well at Costco I can get a 6-pound bag for a little more than $5. That’s a pretty significant difference.
One of Todd and Dylan’s favorite snacks is chips and salsa. Costco has a 2.5-pound bag of organic tortilla chips for just over $4, that’s about a dollar more than a 1-pound bag would cost at the store.
They also have great prices on frozen fruit. I know, frozen fruit is less eco friendly than fresh (it takes a lot more energy to make), but I like it for my smoothies and I certainly buy more fresh than frozen. Ok, done justifying. ;) I do wish they had organic strawberries as well as blueberries though.
And that coffee I mentioned, well I can get a 2-pound bag of organic for the same price as a 1-pound bag of organic at the store. If you’re willing to grind it yourself you can even get fair trade coffee.
I also get our dog food from there. It’s by far the best deal (40-pounds for $21) and actually has pretty good ingredients (no by-products). Yes, I read the ingredients on my dogs’ food as well.
They’re also now carrying toilet paper made from 100% recycled material. I can’t remember how many came in a package but it cost around $14 and broke down to about 12 cents each, now that’s an awesome deal. You can even find eco friendly cleaners and laundry products and quite a few different organic options there too.
And for me there's the added bonus of less packaging. It's the little things in life.
Oh, and as far as Trader Joe’s goes, love! I haven't been much since we moved here because there isn't one close by, the one I went to is about 2 miles past Costco through lots of lights. I forgot how much I love that store, they just have the most unusual foods that I can't find anywhere else. I was even able to find quite a few things that I can actually eat, which is a minor victory in itself considering my food issues. And if you need just one reason to go Trader Joe's it would have to this: cinnamon almonds, ‘nuff said.
I swear, under all that cinnamon and sugar there really are almonds. I had a handful of these with my smoothie for lunch. Hey, if you'd taken 2 kids grocery shopping you'd want an extra special treat too. ;)
So anyways, that was my day. How was yours? ;)

Costco and Trader Joe's are my 2 favorite places to buy groceries! Too, it's a drive for me but it's so worth it! Those tortilla chips from Costco are great and I love all of their organic produce. Plus if we go to Costco around lunchtime, our walk through the store gets me out of making lunch with all of the samples! My favorite thing to get at Trader Joe's is their fresh pretzel rolls! I always end up eating at least half of it before I get home!
I love Costco. There are often organic frozen cherries available at ours...often enough for me to become addicted to them. ;-)
Have a great weekend! xoxo
I need my frozen fruits too. It may not seem eco friendly but I read something that freezing local fruit was actually worse energy-wise than shipping fresh fruit. Sigh. i do both too.
Cinnamon almonds? mmm! I have been loving covered nuts lately. Maybe I will have to make a raw knock-off of those.
I love to buy in bulk, too. I always think the packages look bigger when I get them home and try to put them away though!
OMG THAT IS A HUGE huge huge bag of snacks! LOL!
