There's Nothing Better Than Fresh Picked
Today I took the boys blueberry picking at a local farm. I have been looking forward to this since we went last year. As far as I’m concerned, as long as they have berries to pick, this is the only place we’re going to get them from. Why you ask, oh so many reasons.
I remember my parents taking my brother and me strawberry picking once when we were kids. I absolutely loved it. Getting to eat fresh strawberries right off the bush and getting to have as many as you want. Ah, it was just awesome.
The boys were excited to go pick their own berries, which was cool. Ok, mostly Dylan was excited and Tyler was just tolerating being forced to leave the house. Once we got there though they both definitely got into it. I was explaining how to pick the berries to Dylan and then Tyler would show him what I meant. Like that you want the big ones that are blue all the way around, not the ones that are still a little pink. It was very cool.
Now, I must admit, I’m not a fan of all blueberries. So often when I buy them at the store they’re more tart then sweet and I like my fruit sweet, and these babies are sa-weet.
You can find some pretty sweet blueberries all over the farmers market right now….for $3.50 for a little container. The blueberries at Pine-O-Mine are $4.50 per pound. I stopped by our local health food store today as well and they were selling local organic blueberries for $7.50 per pound. Yeah, not a bad savings.
Oh, and no, they don’t use any pesticides on their berries. The whole family lives right there on the farm and helps out. So cool. They also have pick your own raspberries and then apples and pumpkins in the fall.
We came away with about 2 ½ pounds after about 20 minutes of picking. As much as the boys loved picking them, we didn’t get there as early as I had hoped and it was getting pretty hot. That may have been a good thing though or we could have come home with double that amount. And yes, I do plan on taking those bags back.
I know that my mom will be happy because these berries will make an excellent addition to the granola that Nature’s Hand sent us to try. Sadly, granola is yet another thing I can’t eat, luckily my mom is really enjoying them. If I could eat granola, this would be one that I would buy, no artificial anything and nothing synthetic, very good. Nature’s Hand is also the official granola of Outward Bound.
And if I get tired of eating the berries plain, there's this cobbler recipe on Kristen’s Raw that I found thanks to Bitt talking about the changes she made when she made it. That one was made with strawberries but I bet it would be just as good with these super sweet blueberries.
We also went to the pool today and even though I can’t post pics of Ty, it was by far the best day there with him. He really hasn’t wanted to go because he doesn’t like crowds and there’s nothing that Dylan would rather do than go to the pool lately. So it was just really great seeing Tyler have so much fun with Dylan.
Well I’m beat, how was your day?

The blueberries look luscious! We get them around here for about $1.50 a lb, if we pick them. It's a great bargain.
What yummy fun! We always dressed the kids in the color of the berries we were picking though...haha!
The granola looks so good...great flavor combinations.
Yay for fresh picked berries!! I wish I could do more of it!
