The Good, The Bad and The Seedy

We went up to my grandparents this weekend for a 4th of July BBQ (more later) and of course to check out the garden.

Last week we had lots of broccoli heads starting and I figured they would be perfect and ready for harvesting this week. Well I was wrong, they should have been either harvested last weekend or some time during the week because some time between last weekend and this one they went to seed. My grandma and I were so upset.

I don’t think that any more broccoli will grow from the stalks and I have no idea what to do with the rest of it. And then there are the leaves, I mean, can you eat them? Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

However, everything else seems to be doing well.

We have a little tiny tomato starting on one of our (replanted) tomato plants.

The carrots are going crazy and really needed to be thinned out a bit.

Mom took care of the thinning while I took pictures and cringed. I just hate the idea of having to pull any out that aren’t ready, but I know that the others won’t grow as well if we don’t.

A couple of the carrots she pulled had grown a little so we could just toss those ones.

Instead we brought them, rinsed them and set them out. They’re just too cute aren’t they?

Ok, back to the garden. The watermelons are looking really good and I’m hoping that since the carrots will be ready before them we won’t have to thin any of these out. But I really don’t know.

We also have this guy growing that at first I thought was a runaway watermelon but now that it’s bigger I can see that the leaves aren’t the same as the watermelons. My grandpa thinks that it might be a squash or a pumpkin left over from last year. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

At home the strawberries are looking good. There aren’t any ripe enough to eat, but there are lots popping up.

And I’m super excited that I have a pepper! I think it may even be ready to pick, yay!

Oh, and yes, the kale is still going strong. I think that next year I won’t plant nearly as much, it’s been a little overwhelming. Ah, live and learn.

I've never grown broccoli before, so I can't offer any help in that department.

Too much Kale? Is that even possible? LOL! I remember the summers when we had too much zucchini. Misha will forever refer to it as ookie-ini as a result of one too many zucchini dishes being served. ;-)

Wow...the broccoli grew so fast!

Here is a link about it:

I loved to see the progress in your garden so much, I was inspired to throw some herb seeds into a pot full of dirt lol!

I do actually hope to have a real garden some day :)

Try cutting off the broccoli crown to see if the plant will produce the later florets. It may be too late if the plant already flowered but it's worth a shot! The rest looks great!

Grabbed your link!

dang! too bad about the broccoli! Mine did that last year, but mine wasn't even CLOSE to that size! Mine was the size of like 2 fingers put together, lol. Pitiful!

All your stuff looks great!

Fayinagirl - I didn't actually think so either until I had 12 HUGE plants. It's a lot.

evergreen - thanks for the link! I'm glad you're liking my gardening (mis)adventures! ;)

Aliceson - i cut all the seeded heads off, so maybe something will grow back.

Sheila - That's the thing, they didn't look that big at all the previous weekend! So weird!

Nice update. I'm glad you ate the carrot thinnings. You can actually eat the tops too. They go nicely in salad.

I just read in the Western Garden book http://www.amazon.com/Western-Garden-Book-Sunset-Editors/dp/0376038519 that if you cut the middle one smaller side ones will grow but that may not happen if it goes to seed. Anyway this book was a family resource growing up and I just read a whole bunch of it at my dads. I think you would find it really useful.
