It Takes A Village
As I mentioned Monday, for the 4th of July we went up to my grandparents house and had a BBQ. My grandma also thought it would be a great time to bust out the ice cream maker, who could argue with that?
It had been some time since my grandma had made ice cream and I wanted the boys to help out so getting started was one big bundle of fun.
Grandma explained that the ice cream would be made from condensed milk, half & half and vanilla. We decided not to flavor it because not everyone likes the same flavor. There were berries for those that wanted them and I brought mint extract and chocolate chips so Tyler could make his fave.
At the beginning we mostly had to sit back and let grandma and grandpa take care of things, but that wasn’t too bad. I kept myself busy eating blueberries as you can see by my eating blueberries face.
Lucky for me the boys where really excited to help make the ice cream. It wouldn’t have been nearly as fun if I’d had to make them do it. ;) Dylan wanted to be right in the action the whole time and Tyler wanted to help with whatever he could.
Once the liquid was in we had to pack ice and salt around the container. There was some debate on whether to use rock salt (the kind you use outside) or just table salt. We went with table salt but next time we’ll be picking up some rock salt that’s meant for cooking.
It took that whole bag of ice,
About a cup and a half of salt,
And a cup of water on both the bottom and then on the top.
The ice cream maker is automatic so after getting the ice put around it all we had to do was wait until it stopped mixing. Then voila, a few hours later we had ice cream. It was so amazingly good, much better than any store bought ice cream.
I even managed to save a few berries for the ice cream. Delicious.
We all had a great time making the ice cream and I loved seeing the kids work together with their great-grandparents. Things like this are why I couldn't be any happier living here. It's just awesome.
My dad’s out this week and he’s a big fan of ice cream and make it yourself foods, so I think we’ll be busting out the ice cream maker again very soon.

How wonderful you have those connections with family ... that's so great, especially for kids.
that's an old fashioned one for sure.
we busted ours out yesterday. it is the season for sure!
Makes me want to get an old fashioned ice cream maker - the ones that take salt and ice. Mine is all automatic, which is fun but there's something about the more old fashioned ones (even tho it's automatic) that seems more fun and more authentic. Anyway, looks fun and no doubt so tasty. And of course kids love it! ha ha! Like Bitt said, tis the season for ice cream. Better get mine out too. ;)
What a perfect red, white, and blue dessert!
Even though it was about making something cold like ice cream, this post warmed my heart:)
Awesome.
Fun.
YUM!
